How to Check ITR Refund Status Online in 2026

You filed your income tax returns. You e-verified them. Now you’re waiting. That waiting period is fine for the first couple of weeks. But at some point, the question shifts from “when will it come?” to “has something gone wrong?” And the only way to answer that is to actually check.

The good news is that the Income Tax Department has made refund tracking genuinely simple in 2026. Two separate portals, both available without needing an appointment or a phone call, can tell you exactly where the refund stands and why it might be stuck. The less good news is that the status messages these portals show are not always self-explanatory, and reacting to the wrong one can waste time or miss something that actually needs fixing.

This guide covers both methods, what every status message means, and what to do when the refund is not moving

Before Checking: What You Need Ready

Two pieces of information are needed for either method.

Your PAN number. And your acknowledgement number, the 15-digit number on the ITR-V document that was emailed to your registered address when the return was filed and verified. If you filed online and verified using Aadhaar OTP, the ITR-V would have come to the email linked with your filing account.

Also worth confirming before you start: your return must have been e-verified before refund processing begins. The department does not start processing returns that have not been verified. If you filed but forgot to verify, no refund tracking will show meaningful progress until verification is complete.

The Income Tax e-Filing Portal

This is the primary method and the one that gives the most comprehensive status information.

  • Go to incometax.gov.in and log in using your PAN as the user ID and your password.
  • Once inside, there are two paths to refund status depending on whether you want to check with or without logging in.

With login (more detailed view):

  • Click on e-File in the top menu. Then Income Tax Returns. Then View Filed Returns.
  • All returns you have ever filed appear here. Select Assessment Year 2026-27 for the current year’s refund. The status appears alongside the filing date and form type.

Without login (quick check):

  • On the portal homepage, click ITR Status at the top. Enter your acknowledgement number and the mobile number linked to your PAN.
  • An OTP is sent to that mobile number. Enter the OTP, and the current status appears immediately. This OTP is valid for 15 minutes only.
  • The portal is going 24×7 support from July 25 through July 31, 2026, specifically to handle the filing rush. After July 31, normal support hours resume, but the portal itself remains available around the clock.

What Every Status Message Actually Means

This is where most people get confused. The portal shows a status but it is not always obvious what action, if any, is required.

Return Submitted and Pending for e-Verification

The return was filed but not yet verified. No processing has started and no refund will be issued. E-Verify immediately using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or by posting a signed ITR-V to CPC Bangalore within 30 days of filing.

Successfully e-Verified

The return has been verified. Processing has not started yet. No action needed. This is a waiting stage.

Return Processing

The CPC in Bangalore is actively processing the return. This is normal and good. No action needed.

Refund Issued

The refund has been processed and dispatched. It should reach the bank account within 3 to 5 working days from this date. If 5 working days pass and it has not arrived, check the Protean portal for bank-level confirmation.

Refund Under Process

The return has been processed but the refund calculation is still being verified internally. This stage can last a few days to a few weeks. No immediate action needed but worth checking back every few days.

No Demand No Refund

The return has been processed and the department’s calculation matches the filed return exactly, with no tax due and no refund due either. If you believed a refund was owed, this means a mismatch occurred during processing. Check the Section 143(1) intimation sent to your registered email for the department’s calculation and compare it with your filed return.

Refund Failed

The refund was issued but the bank rejected it. Most common reasons are incorrect IFSC code, incorrect account number, account name mismatch, or the bank account is not pre-validated on the portal. Action required: log in to the portal, go to My Profile, then Bank Account, and correct the bank details. After updating, raise a refund reissue request.

Defective Return

The return has been flagged as defective under Section 139(9), meaning there is an error serious enough that the filing is incomplete. A notice would have been sent to the registered email and appears in the portal under e-Proceedings. There is a 15-day window to correct and refile the return. Missing this window means the original return is treated as if it was never filed.

Return Under Processing

A general status indicating the return is in the queue at CPC. Normal at this stage of the process. No action required.

How Long Does a Refund Actually Take in 2026?

According to the Income Tax Department’s own guidelines, refund processing begins only after e-verification. It typically takes 4 to 5 weeks from that point for the credit to reach the bank account.

But timing varies significantly based on when the return was filed. Early filers in April and May 2026 are sitting at the front of a much smaller queue at CPC Bangalore. Returns filed in the July rush join a significantly longer queue. A return filed in April could see a refund by May or June. A return filed on July 31 is more likely to see the refund in September or October.

This is one of the most practical reasons to file early even when the deadline has not passed. The refund arrives weeks earlier simply by avoiding the last-minute crowd.

Why Refunds Get Delayed: The Most Common Reasons

  • Return not e-verified. Processing never starts without verification. Check the portal status and verify if this has been missed.
  • Bank account not pre-validated. The department credits refunds only to pre-validated bank accounts linked to a PAN. Log in to the portal, go to My Profile, then Bank Account, and confirm the account is pre-validated and the IFSC is correct.
  • PAN not linked to Aadhaar. If PAN is inoperative due to non-linking with Aadhaar, the refund cannot be issued. The portal shows a specific message about this. Linking PAN with Aadhaar can be done through the income tax portal or the NSDL portal with the applicable fee under Section 234H if the deadline has passed.
  • AIS or Form 26AS mismatch. If the income declared in the return does not match what appears in the Annual Information Statement or Form 26AS, CPC may put the refund on hold pending clarification. Check the AIS under the portal’s Services section and compare with what was filed.
  • Outstanding demand from a previous year. The department can adjust a current year refund against outstanding tax demands from earlier years. If this happens, a notice is sent explaining the adjustment. Check the e-Proceedings section and the registered email.

Raising a Refund Reissue Request

If the status shows Refund Failed and the bank details have been corrected, a refund reissue request is needed to trigger a fresh attempt.

Log in to the income tax portal. Go to Services. Select Refund Reissue. Select the assessment year and the correct bank account. Submit the request. The department processes reissue requests and the refund is sent again to the corrected bank account.

Filing a Rectification if the Refund Amount is Wrong

If the Section 143(1) intimation shows a different refund amount from what was expected, and the difference is due to a calculation error in the department’s processing rather than a genuine disagreement, a rectification request under Section 154 can be filed.

Go to e-File on the portal, then Rectification Request. Select the relevant year and the reason for rectification. Upload supporting documents if required. The department reviews rectification requests and reprocesses them where the error is established.

FAQs

  • How do I check my ITR refund status without logging into the income tax portal?

Go to incometax.gov.in and click ITR Status on the homepage without logging in. Enter your 15-digit acknowledgement number and the mobile number linked to your PAN. An OTP is sent to that number and is valid for 15 minutes. After entering the OTP, the current refund status appears. This method works even if you do not remember your portal password and gives the same current status as the logged-in view.

  • What does Refund Failed mean and what should I do?

Refund Failed means the department issued the refund but the bank rejected it, usually because of an incorrect IFSC code, wrong account number, account name mismatch, or the bank account not being pre-validated on the portal. Log in to the income tax portal, go to My Profile, then Bank Account, correct the details, and then raise a refund reissue request under Services. The department will send the refund again to the corrected account once the reissue request is processed.

  • How long does an ITR refund take after e-verification in 2026?

According to Income Tax Department guidelines, refund processing typically takes 4 to 5 weeks from the date of e-verification for the credit to reach the bank account. Timing varies significantly based on when the return was filed. Returns filed in April and May 2026 face a smaller CPC queue and tend to receive refunds faster, sometimes within a month.
